Exercise - The Key to Heart Health:

Physical activity is a major factor for controlling heart disease.
We all need to get moving, because being active offers huge
benefits, including (and this is important!) reducing other risk
factors.

Combined with healthy eating, at least 30 minutes of physical
activity on most days of the week can help:

  • Keep weight under control
  • Improve blood cholesterol levels
  • Prevent and manage high blood pressure
  • Boost your energy
  • Manage stress
  • Improve your self image

Pick a physical activity that you like, and stick to it. Go to a gym if you want to, but it’s not necessary — and you certainly don’t have to be a world-class athlete to move and improve.

Just start doing things you enjoy, like

  • Dancing
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Playing with your kids
  • Riding a bike

Be creative, have fun and — for your heart’s sake — be active regularly.

Exercise At least 30 minutes on most or all days of the week.

START walking

Walking is the most convenient, most sustainable, most affordable, and not to mention the easiest way for you to start becoming ‘heart healthy’. You can walk anytime, anywhere you want and you only need to do it for half an hour each day. It has the lowest drop-out rate of any physical activity according to the American Heart Association and busy parents like you can find creative ways to fit it into your daily schedule at no additional cost. No need for costly gym memberships and exercise outfits to improve your physical well-being.

Walking is also great because it can become a social activity. You can either do it by yourself or you can involve your family and friends. It is a fantastic way to bond with your spouse and children because it gives you an opportunity to spend time together talking and seeing new things. You can share what is going on in your lives with each other while being more physically active.

Put on a pair of comfortable shoes and start brisk walking to the nearest park, around the mall or your favorite spot for thirty minutes regularly. This simple activity can lead to the following:

Improved energy level

Reduced stress and anxiety

Increased enthusiasm, optimism and self-confidence

Improved circulation, muscle tone and strength

Lower cholesterol and blood pressure and also significantly less bone loss

Reduced weight

Walking also reduces your risk of obesity, osteoporosis, breast and colon cancer and non-insulin dependent (Type 2) diabetes.
